Rock Solid: Jesus is Willing 2

I teach middle school students on Sunday mornings and we have been going through a series on the core doctrines of the faith.  In this study, we realized that one of the ways we know the character of God is through his actions.  In this passage we see Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, the Son of God, filled with compassion.

In the Gospels, there are many occasions where the authors comment on Jesus’ compassion for the people he is in contact with.  Read through the following passages to see some other occurrences of when Jesus showed compassion:

  • Matthew 9:35-38
  • Matthew 14:13-21
  • Matthew 20:29-34

Compassion is a recurring theme in Jesus’ ministry.  Our God is a God of compassion.  Praise be to God that he looked down on you and me with love and compassion, for while we were still sinners Christ died for us.  Not because we deserved it, not because we chose Him, but because he chose us (Romans 5:6-8).

Pray that God would open our eyes to his compassion.  Praise him for what he has done for us and thank him for his loving kindness.

The more I understand about God\‘s character, the more I am humbled by His compassion.  It\‘s easier, in a sense, to understand Jesus\’ compassion.  he was God/man walking about, surrounded by the masses so in need.  Confronted with poor, diseased and downtrodden, He felt compassion.  To some extent, I could do that. But God the Father?  He had compassion on His enemies, those who have sinned directly in His face.  We have mocked, scorned, and defied Him and crucified His Son.  Now, His wayward creation lives apart from Him, hoping against hope that a judgment will arise from Him.  And the Father has compassion on us?  I really can\‘t fathom that.  He is simply too far above me.
