How’s Your Love Life?

Bob Warren | Sep 3, 2010

Read Deuteronomy 3.  When Moses reminds the sons of Israel of their recent past victories (verse 4), it is to encourage them of coming future victories. Deuteronomy is part of a bigger picture that depicts God’s work and will. How does the beginning of the Pentateuch, (i.e., Genesis 1:1-2:14) provide the answer for the anticipation and realization of Genesis 15:1-21 (and Deuteronomy) in the account found in the Book of Joshua? With this opening paragraph, there is a new people anticipating a new land which will mean a new life.  more...

Remembering God’s Faithfulness

Bob Warren | Sep 2, 2010

Read Deuteronomy 2. If you looked at any of the maps on Tuesday, how extensive is the Promised Land?  What were its boundaries?  Did Israel ever possess all this land? See Deut. 2:8 we read, “See, I have given you this land. Go in and take possession of the land.” “Go and Take” is based on what? How do these events contribute to Israel’s confidence? more...

A Book of Good News

Bob Warren | Sep 1, 2010

Let’s read the Book of Deuteronomy. There are 34 chapters in this book.  If we were to read just one chapter a day, beginning today, by the time we hear Pastor Colin’s tenth message, we will have the read Deuteronomy through twice! Basically the book can be divided into four sections:  Chapters 1-4, 5-26, 27-30 and 31-34.  Instead of giving titles of these sections to you, why not read your chapter each day with a pencil, make a few notes along the way, and then determine a title or theme for each of these sections. more...

These are the Words

Bob Warren | Aug 31, 2010

Picking up from yesterday, take a few minutes to read Acts 7:1-50. As Stephen rehearses Israel’s journey, how many times does he make mention of Moses?  There is something more urgent from Stephen. As Stephen walked through Israel’s history, what was his conclusion regarding his listeners? (Read verse 51.) As we are only in the second day of Deuteronomy, again ask the Spirit of the Living God to give us eyes to see and ears to hear and thereby not be stiff-necked to God’s truth.  Stephen’s challenge to his listeners in his day is true for us today – we cannot really grasp the impact of history without the Gospel. more...

Welcome to Deuteronomy!

Bob Warren | Aug 30, 2010

Welcome to the Book of Deuteronomy! This fall, Pastor Colin will be leading us a fascinating Old Testament book.  These 34 chapters are more than just ancient history and a repeat of the law given to the children of Israel. Want an enticing tidbit to jump start your exploration of this book? Guess what Old Testament book Jesus quoted from most often? Yes, that’s right…Deuteronomy! At the outset of this weekly study, why not take a moment right now and ask the Spirit of the Living God to open the eyes of your heart (Ephesians 1:18) so you can experience what Jesus said is necessary for life. (See Matt. 4:4 and Deut. 8:3.) more...

Anatomy of Faith: Paul’s Challenge

Bob Warren | Apr 16, 2010

Read Romans 10:14-15a. Here’s a restatement of Paul’s thought … Every man and woman is to call on the name of the Lord. How can one call on the One they have not believed in? How can one believe in the One they have not heard? more...

Anatomy of Faith: Example of Believers in Thessalonica

Bob Warren | Apr 15, 2010

Read 1 Thessalonians 1:2-7 and 2:13. These Thessalonian believers model three aspects of interacting with God Word. They appreciated the Word of Christ. When these men and women heard the Apostle Paul, they did not listen as one listening to the talking of any man, but they received it as the Word of Christ. How do you listen (read) the Word of God (privately and publicly)? more...

As background to the John 14 passage, skim Luke 22:1-14 along with John 13:1. John 14:1-6 is regarded as one of the most comforting passages in the Bible. Verse 1 begins with “let not your heart be troubled.” What three or four reasons more...
